Katie M. DeCoster
Whether working with governmental entities, businesses, or commercial insurers, Katie provides the legal counsel necessary for her clients to make educated decisions and confidently move forward.
Katie’s diverse practice spans both governmental work and litigation. As a member of the firm’s Government Group, she helps local cities, towns, and counties with a host of legal issues including local government law, employment law, and municipal litigation. Her practice includes litigating cases for local departments of social services as well as working with treasurers in Southwest Virginia to recover delinquent real estate taxes. She also acts as an investigator and advisor in private colleges and universities’ Title IX process.
Katie also provides step-by-step guidance to small and midsize businesses facing debilitating legal disputes. Having tried numerous cases in state and federal courts across Virginia and West Virginia, Katie knows which avenues of litigation are most likely to succeed with a judge or jury.
Her clients trust her to accurately assess their cases, and they know she will help them determine the best approach, all while keeping their personal goals and budget in mind. Katie’s litigation experience includes insurance defense, trucking defense, products liability, premises liability, government, and constitutional law matters.
Prior to entering private practice, Katie worked as an Assistant Attorney General in Abingdon, Virginia. While there, she represented the Commonwealth of Virginia, its agencies, and its employees in a variety of civil litigation matters in administrative, state, and federal courts.
Katie enjoys many activities outside of the office. She can usually be found at a park, pool, or hiking trail with her husband, two children, and their husky. She is also an enthusiastic CrossFitter.
