Anne E. Mickey
Anne’s practice in the area of education law is driven by her passion for helping support the important work of the public school system. For years, Anne has provided lasting value for school divisions across Virginia, both through her direct counsel and through her work as a sought-after public speaker.
Anne focuses her education law practice in the area of student services, with a specialization in special education law. She counsels her clients on compliance questions arising from the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (“IDEA”), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (“Section 504”), and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”). Anne regularly attends IEP meetings and Section 504 meetings, participates in the development and review of local policies and procedures, oversees and guides internal investigations, and helps to negotiate creative and efficient solutions to difficult student disputes. If litigation is necessary, Anne has successfully defended her clients in federal and state court matters, due process hearings, and state and federal government investigations.
Anne is also a seasoned public speaker and writer regarding education law issues. She has been invited to speak at conferences hosted by the Virginia School Boards Association, the National School Board Association, the Virginia Council of Administrators of Special Education, and the Western Virginia Public Education Consortium. Anne has also developed a variety of in-service presentations that focus on providing school administrators and teachers with practical tools and tips that they can use to navigate the complex requirements of applicable federal and state laws.
Anne is one of the founders of the Sands Anderson Female Attorneys Affinity Group where she enjoys leading conversation and professional development for her colleagues. In her spare time, Anne enjoys relaxing with her husband and two daughters, cheering for her favorite Notre Dame sports teams (Go Irish!), and cooking Italian food.
