Tracking Virginia Supreme Court Judicial Emergency Orders

Supreme Court of Virginia

On March 16, 2020, the Supreme Court entered the first of numerous orders declaring a judicial emergency as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The statutory authority that permits the Court to declare an emergency requires the declaration to end or be renewed after 21 days.

The Court's declaration orders contain a variety of rules for how courts should operate and cases should proceed during the pandemic.  These rules have changed over the months of the judicial emergency as circumstances have evolved and the Court has worked to tailor its orders to those shifting circumstances.

This chart tracks when the Court entered judicial emergency orders and identifies what each successive order required and permitted.

We'll keep updating this chart as the judicial emergency orders continue.

Special thanks to Theodore LaRose IV, Sands Anderson Associate, for his help in creating this chart.
